In a major move to streamline the U.S. government, President Donald Trump has offered federal workers the opportunity to resign in exchange for up to eight months of pay. The administration is encouraging nearly all government employees to decide by February 6 whether they want to participate in a new “deferred resignation” program, which would allow them to leave their jobs by the end of September.

The offer, which was communicated through an email from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), has sparked confusion among some workers about the specifics of the deal.

According to the OPM’s website, the program would exempt workers from their usual duties, meaning those who resign under this program would not be expected to work—unless in rare circumstances. Additionally, those who choose to leave would be exempt from Trump’s new mandate requiring federal employees to work in the office five days a week, a reversal of the flexible work-from-home policies that were implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This initiative is part of a broader plan to reduce government spending and reform the federal workforce. Senior administration officials have suggested that the program could help save the government up to $100 billion, as part of efforts to reduce the size of the federal bureaucracy. However, some workers have expressed uncertainty about the long-term implications of resigning, particularly regarding future benefits and retirement plans.

The offer is open to all full-time federal employees, although there are notable exceptions, such as postal workers, military personnel, immigration officers, and members of national security teams. Those interested in taking up the offer have been asked to respond to the OPM email with the word “resign” in the subject line, signaling their intent to participate in the program.

The White House has described the offer as “very generous,” and it aligns with Trump’s ongoing push to reduce government spending and bring more efficiency to the federal workforce. Following his return to the White House, Trump has also pushed for an end to the COVID-era remote working arrangements, reinforcing his stance on returning to traditional office environments for federal workers.

This announcement marks a significant shift in the administration’s approach to government employment, with many wondering how the offer will impact both workers and the broader government landscape in the coming months.
