Trump Pauses Tariffs After Call with Mexico President.

In a move that eases some tensions between the United States and Mexico, President Donald Trump has announced that he will “immediately pause” tariffs on Mexico for a month.

This decision follows a conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who assured Trump that 10,000 soldiers would be deployed to the US-Mexico border. Despite this temporary relief, Trump’s tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China were still set to take effect at midnight ET this weekend, adding to ongoing trade frictions. Trump is also expected to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau later today to discuss the looming tariffs on Canada.

Meanwhile, significant changes are unfolding within the federal government, particularly at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that he is now acting administrator of USAID, a development that comes in the wake of Elon Musk’s involvement in overhauling the federal government. Musk had previously suggested that Trump had agreed to shut down USAID, which has faced scrutiny after its funding was frozen, and numerous employees were placed on leave. The agency’s Washington headquarters was closed on Monday, with staff instructed to stay at home, leaving many to speculate about the future of USAID.

The ongoing reshuffling of Trump’s administration has also led to potential clashes within the president’s Cabinet. Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s pick for spy chief, is seeking support from GOP senators ahead of a crucial vote by the Senate Intelligence Committee scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. Gabbard’s nomination has raised concerns among some GOP members, and she continues to navigate these challenges. Additionally, another controversial pick, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has been nominated for a Cabinet position, is likely to face resistance ahead of a Senate vote. These developments suggest that Trump’s push for government changes will face ongoing hurdles, both domestically and within his own party.
