US President Donald Trump has threatened to cut all future funding to South Africa over allegations that the country is confiscating land without compensation and mistreating certain groups of people. His comments come after the South African government, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa, passed a new bill that allows land seizures under specific circumstances.

The land issue has been a longstanding and contentious matter in South Africa, with the majority of private farmland historically owned by white individuals, despite the end of apartheid more than three decades ago. The country has faced increasing pressure to address land reform and rectify the injustices created by its previous system of racial segregation.
In response to Trump’s threat, President Ramaphosa took to social media platform X, asserting that South Africa is a constitutional democracy that adheres to the rule of law, justice, and equality. He emphasized that the South African government had not yet confiscated any land, and any such action would be done according to the constitution and laws of the country. Furthermore, he pointed out that the United States’ financial aid to South Africa, particularly through the health initiative PEPFAR (The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief), was essential for the country’s HIV/AIDS program, which accounted for 17% of South Africa’s efforts to combat the disease.
In 2023, the United States allocated approximately $440 million in assistance to South Africa, a figure that highlights the significant role the country plays in global aid distribution.
The debate has also sparked comments from Elon Musk, a South African-born entrepreneur and an adviser to Trump. Musk joined the conversation by asserting that the new land law discriminates against white South Africans, fueling further tensions surrounding the issue of land ownership and racial dynamics in the country.
