Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka has announced that prisoners who were previously being tried by the General Court Martial and other military courts will remain in detention until the government finalizes their case transfers to civilian courts.

Speaking during a plenary session at Parliament yesterday, Mr. Kiwanuka explained that the government is currently working on a process to move these cases from military to civilian courts. However, he did not provide a clear timeline for when this transition would be completed, raising concerns among legislators and human rights activists.

In a separate revelation, the Attorney General also addressed concerns regarding the government’s proposed electoral reforms. He stated that his office has not received any official instructions from Justice Minister Norbert Mao regarding the drafting of electoral reform Bills. This disclosure has sparked debate, as electoral reforms are considered crucial ahead of the next general elections.

Mr. Kiwanuka’s statements have raised questions about the government’s commitment to both judicial processes and democratic reforms. Opposition lawmakers have expressed concerns over delays in electoral reforms, warning that time is running out to implement meaningful changes before the next elections. Meanwhile, legal experts have called for transparency and urgency in the transfer of military court cases to civilian judicial systems.

The government is yet to provide further clarification on both issues, leaving many stakeholders awaiting official communication on the next steps.
