Prince Karim Aga Khan, the 49th hereditary imam of the Ismaili Muslim community, has passed away at the age of 88, his charity, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), announced. According to the statement, he died peacefully in Lisbon, Portugal, surrounded by his family.

Born in Switzerland, the Aga Khan held British citizenship and resided in a château in France. As the spiritual leader of millions of Ismaili Muslims worldwide, he was regarded as a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. Over the decades, he was widely recognized for his humanitarian efforts, leading numerous projects in healthcare, education, and cultural preservation, particularly in developing nations.
His philanthropic work was carried out through the Aga Khan Development Network, which operates hundreds of hospitals, schools, and social initiatives around the world. Despite his deep involvement in charity and community welfare, the Aga Khan was also known for his luxurious lifestyle, owning a private island in the Bahamas, a super-yacht, and a private jet.
His passing has been met with condolences from global leaders. King Charles, who had a long-standing friendship with him as well as with the late Queen Elizabeth II, is said to be deeply saddened and has reached out privately to the Aga Khan’s family.
In its official statement, the Aga Khan Development Network expressed its sorrow and reiterated its commitment to continuing his mission. “We continue to work with our partners to improve the quality of life for individuals and communities across the world, as he wished, irrespective of their religious affiliations or origins,” the organization stated.
The Aga Khan leaves behind a lasting legacy of philanthropy and leadership, with his influence extending far beyond the Ismaili Muslim community.
