President Donald Trump has come to the defense of Elon Musk as the billionaire pushes to shut down sections of the U.S. government, despite ongoing legal challenges and concerns over transparency and conflicts of interest.
Speaking on Sunday, Trump dismissed allegations that Musk was benefiting personally from the changes the administration is seeking to implement, such as the proposed closure of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

“He’s not gaining anything. In fact, I wonder how he can devote the time to it,” Trump stated.
Trump also revealed that Musk’s unofficial government oversight initiative, referred to as the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), would soon examine military and Department of Education expenditures.
“Let’s check the military,” Trump said. “We’re going to find billions, hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud and abuse, and the people elected me on that.”
The move has been met with mixed reactions, but U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signaled his support for the initiative. Speaking to Fox News, Hegseth acknowledged the need for greater oversight in defense spending.
“When we spend dollars, we need to know where they’re going and why, and that has not existed at the Defense Department,” he said.
During the same interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, Trump also addressed his concerns over drug trafficking and border security, stating that he was “not satisfied” with Mexico and Canada’s efforts on these issues.
Additionally, Trump reiterated his controversial proposal to annex Canada as the 51st U.S. state. While the idea has been widely opposed by Canadians, Trump appeared serious about pushing the proposal forward.
His comments came during a pre-game broadcast leading up to Sunday’s Super Bowl, further highlighting his administration’s focus on restructuring government agencies and international relations.
