In a significant shift in U.S. foreign policy, President Donald Trump announced that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to initiate immediate negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing war in Ukraine. This development follows a lengthy and productive phone call between the two leaders.

In a statement on his social media platform, Truth Social, President Trump emphasized the shared commitment to halting the conflict:

“As we both agreed, we want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the War with Russia/Ukraine.”

He further noted that both he and President Putin have agreed to visit each other’s nations to strengthen diplomatic ties.

The U.S. negotiating team is set to include key figures such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, National Security Adviser Michael Waltz, and Ambassador and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Their immediate task will be to engage with their Russian counterparts to lay the groundwork for a potential ceasefire.

Following his conversation with President Putin, President Trump also reached out to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. President Zelensky confirmed the call and expressed a strong desire for peace. He is expected to meet with U.S. Vice President JD Vance at the upcoming Munich Security Conference to discuss further steps.

However, the proposed U.S. negotiating position has raised concerns among Ukrainian and European officials. Notably, the U.S. stance reportedly rules out sending American troops to Ukraine and does not support Ukraine’s entry into NATO. Additionally, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has indicated that restoring Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders is not considered realistic, implicitly accepting some of Russia’s territorial gains.

This announcement comes on the heels of the release of U.S. teacher Marc Fogel from a Russian prison, an event that President Trump views as a positive step toward improving U.S.-Russia relations.

The international community will be closely monitoring these developments as the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine navigate the complex path toward a potential resolution of the conflict.
