Arriving at NATO headquarters early Thursday, European defense ministers voiced a unified concern: negotiations about Ukraine’s future must include both Ukraine and Europe at the table. However, there is growing uncertainty over whether the United States is truly listening.
After a whirlwind 24 hours of US announcements, European leaders appear to have been caught off guard by former President Donald Trump’s engagement with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Many now fear that Europe may be sidelined in potential negotiations over ending the war in Ukraine.
Germany’s Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, described Trump’s recent call with Putin as “very much out of the blue.” Despite Trump’s long-standing claims that he aims to bring a swift resolution to the war, European officials were seemingly unprepared for this direct outreach to Moscow.
British Defence Secretary John Healey was clear in his stance: “There can be no negotiation about Ukraine without Ukraine.” Echoing this sentiment, Dutch Defence Secretary Ruben Brekelmans insisted that Europe must also be part of the discussions, warning that any deal struck without European involvement could have serious implications for the continent’s security.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reinforced the need for collaboration, posting on X: “All we need is peace. A just peace. Ukraine, Europe, and the United States should work on this together. Together.”
The latest developments underscore the growing divide between the US and its European allies on handling the Ukraine conflict. While Europe remains committed to ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty, the fear of being sidelined in diplomatic negotiations has sparked urgent calls for greater unity and involvement in shaping the future of European security.
