Liberian President Joseph Boakai has taken decisive action against corruption by suspending 457 top government officials, including key ministers, for failing to declare their assets as required by law. The suspension, which is without pay, will last for one month or until the affected officials submit their asset declarations to the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC).

According to the presidency, the suspended officials have violated the country’s code of conduct for public officials, which mandates asset declaration before assuming office and upon leaving government positions. The failure to comply, President Boakai emphasized, undermines efforts to combat corruption and promote accountability in governance.

Among those suspended are the Minister of Education, the Minister of Health, and the special envoys for tourism and investment. Additionally, officials working for the Executive Mansion—Liberia’s presidential residence—and county administrative officials are also affected by the suspension.

The LACC, which oversees the enforcement of anti-corruption laws, published a comprehensive list of the suspended officials. The commission stated that this action aligns with legal provisions aimed at ensuring transparency and preventing illicit wealth accumulation among public servants.

Since taking office last year, President Boakai has prioritized the fight against corruption, vowing to uphold accountability and good governance. This latest move demonstrates his administration’s commitment to enforcing transparency laws and ensuring compliance among government officials.

The suspension sends a strong message that failure to adhere to ethical standards will have consequences, as Liberia continues its efforts to strengthen governance and restore public trust in its institutions.
