Luwero Triangle: War Veteran Mzee Steven “Neko” Mukiibi Laid to Rest

Thousands of mourners from across the country gathered in Masurita, Luwero, to pay their final respects to the legendary Mzee Steven Mukiibi, commonly known as Neko.

Mzee Neko was a highly respected senior citizen who played a crucial role in the NRA Liberation War, which ended in 1986. As a young, energetic farmer and businessman, he provided invaluable support to NRA soldiers, offering them shelter, food, medical assistance, and transportation. His contributions to the struggle were widely recognized, and his legacy remains deeply rooted in the history of the region.

The burial ceremony was attended by representatives from the central government, the Buganda Kingdom, and the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF), a testament to the impact he had on his community and country.

Mzee Mukiibi had battled a long-term heart condition. In 2023, he underwent heart surgery, which resulted in a heart valve replacement. On Thursday, February 13, 2025, he was rushed to a local clinic after experiencing breathing difficulties and was pronounced dead at 4:45 PM EAT.

“He was an honorable man who respected everyone, both young and old,” said Florence Nambasa Kalibbala. “Neko was the only wealthy man in Semuto who was never involved in land scandals.”

At the time of his passing, Mzee Mukiibi was 68 years old and is survived by more than six children and over ten grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the entire community.
