Giant Opposition Leaders, Led by Bobi Wine, Issue 48-Hour Ultimatum for Besigye’s Release.

KAMPALA – Veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and several other opposition figures remain incarcerated in Luzira and Kitalya prisons, despite a Supreme Court ruling that ordered their case files to be transferred from military to civilian courts. The continued detention has sparked outrage among opposition leaders and their supporters, who are demanding their immediate release.

In a bold move, Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, and other key opposition figures have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to President Yoweri Museveni, demanding the release of Besigye and all political prisoners. The opposition leaders argue that the continued detention of their colleagues is a blatant violation of the court ruling and an attack on democracy in Uganda.

The arrests come in the wake of increased tensions between the government and the National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda’s leading opposition party. Reports indicate that several NUP figures have been abducted following threats from the Ugandan military. The military had previously warned NUP supporters of severe consequences after videos emerged showing NUP ‘foot soldiers’ conducting an army-like parade in Kampala.

Amid the escalating political crisis, Bobi Wine, NUP president, and Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, led a team of opposition politicians to Luzira Prison to check on Dr. Besigye, who is reportedly in poor health. Their visit is part of ongoing efforts to push for his release and highlight the plight of political detainees in the country.

The opposition leaders have vowed to continue exerting pressure on the government, warning of nationwide protests if their demands are not met. With the 2026 elections on the horizon, Uganda’s political landscape remains highly volatile, and the handling of this crisis could have significant implications for the country’s future.
