Nyanjura, Ingrid Turinawe Among Five Charged Over ‘Free Besigye’ Protest in Kampala.

Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura and activist Ingrid Turinawe are among five individuals who have been charged in connection with the “Free Besigye and All Political Prisoners” protest in Kampala. The group appeared before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court on February 18, 2025, following their arrest the previous day.

The activists were apprehended on February 17 while demonstrating in support of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye. They wore blue and white t-shirts emblazoned with the slogan “Kill Me, Spare Besigye,” signaling their solidarity with Besigye and other detained political figures. Their demonstration, which called for the release of all political prisoners, was quickly suppressed by security forces.

During their court appearance, the accused were charged with offenses related to unlawful assembly and inciting violence. Authorities accused them of engaging in acts that disrupted public order. However, their lawyers and supporters argue that their protest was peaceful and aimed at highlighting concerns over political repression in Uganda.

The arrest and prosecution of the activists have drawn criticism from human rights organizations and opposition figures, who see the move as part of a broader crackdown on dissent. They argue that the Ugandan government is increasingly using legal means to silence critics and suppress peaceful protests.

As the case progresses, supporters of the accused continue to demand their release, emphasizing the need for greater political freedoms and the respect of democratic rights in the country.
