Former U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a fresh attack on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, calling him a “dictator” and criticizing his leadership amid the ongoing war with Russia. Trump accused Zelensky of doing a “terrible job” and claimed that the Ukrainian leader was “refusing to have elections” in the country.

Trump’s remarks come as tensions rise between the two leaders following Zelensky’s recent comments accusing the former U.S. president of “living in a disinformation space” created by Russia. The Ukrainian president made this statement after the United States held talks with Moscow in Saudi Arabia—negotiations from which Ukraine was notably excluded.

Fact-checkers and analysts have pointed out that Ukraine has been under martial law since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Under these conditions, elections have been suspended as part of wartime emergency measures. Zelensky and his government have previously stated that holding elections during the war would be impractical and dangerous.

When asked how he would respond to Ukrainians who feel “betrayed” by not having a seat at the negotiating table, Trump suggested that Ukraine “could have made a deal” earlier in the conflict. His remarks align with his past claims that he could have ended the war swiftly if he had been in office.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin weighed in on the matter, asserting that “nobody is excluding Ukraine” from discussions about ending the war. However, Kyiv and its allies have repeatedly expressed concerns that negotiations held without Ukraine’s direct involvement could lead to unfavorable compromises that benefit Moscow.

Trump’s latest comments are likely to add to the ongoing debate over U.S. support for Ukraine and the direction of international efforts to resolve the conflict. As the war continues, divisions over the best path forward remain a contentious issue in both American and global politics.
