South Africa has officially opened the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting, with President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasizing the importance of multilateralism and adherence to international law in addressing global crises. His remarks come amid increasing tension between South Africa and the United States, as key American officials have chosen to boycott the discussions.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio declined to attend the meeting, stating that he would not “coddle anti-Americanism.” In addition, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that he would not be present at next week’s G20 finance ministers’ gathering, citing other commitments in Washington. These absences highlight growing concerns about the Trump administration’s “America First” policy, which has contributed to diplomatic friction between the US and several global partners, including South Africa.
As the first African nation to lead the G20, South Africa aims to use its position to advocate for the interests of developing nations. The country hopes to bridge the gap between the world’s richest economies and those still striving for economic growth and stability. Despite the US snubbing the meeting, South Africa remains committed to fostering international cooperation and addressing pressing global challenges.
The US absence at these critical discussions raises questions about the effectiveness of international diplomacy and cooperation in the current geopolitical climate. While South Africa pushes for unity and collective problem-solving, the Trump administration’s policies appear to prioritize unilateral action over collaborative solutions.
As the G20 meetings continue, the world will be watching to see how South Africa navigates these challenges and whether it can successfully promote the interests of developing nations in the face of growing international divisions.
