At least 46 people have been killed and 10 others injured after a Sudanese military plane crashed in a residential neighborhood in Omdurman, the twin city of the capital, Khartoum. State media reported that the Antonov aircraft went down on Tuesday evening after taking off from the military’s Wadi Seidna air base. The crash resulted in the deaths of both military officers and civilians.

The cause of the crash remains unclear, but military sources have suggested that a technical malfunction may have been responsible. The incident occurred just a day after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which is engaged in a brutal war with the army, claimed to have downed a fighter jet in South Darfur.

The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF has devastated large parts of the country, particularly Khartoum and Omdurman. Thousands of people have been killed, and approximately 12 million have been displaced since fighting erupted in April 2023. The war has effectively split the country, with the army controlling the north and east while the RSF holds most of Darfur in the west and parts of the south.

Following the crash, emergency teams rushed injured civilians, including children, to a nearby hospital. Among those killed was a senior army commander in Khartoum, according to military sources cited by Reuters.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion as the plane came down, damaging several homes in the area. The crash also triggered power outages in nearby neighborhoods, further exacerbating the hardship faced by residents.

In recent weeks, the Sudanese army has launched counteroffensives to reclaim parts of Khartoum and surrounding areas from the RSF. However, the latest plane crash underscores the ongoing instability and devastation caused by the war, as civilians continue to bear the brunt of the prolonged conflict.
