Gunfire and explosions have disrupted a rally held by rebel leaders Corneille Nangaa in Bukavu, a city recently captured in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The violence erupted as the crowd gathered for the event, sending people fleeing in panic.

Videos from the scene depict chaotic moments, with bodies lying on the streets and terrified civilians running for safety. Although official casualty figures remain unclear, AFP news agency cited a hospital source reporting at least 11 deaths and 60 wounded. The full extent of the damage is yet to be confirmed.
The rally marked the first public gathering by the Rwanda-backed rebels since they seized control of Bukavu earlier this month. The armed group has made rapid territorial gains in eastern DRC, intensifying the conflict in the region.
Eastern Congo has long been a battleground for various armed groups, with foreign involvement further complicating the situation. The latest violence raises fears of further instability, as government forces struggle to regain control.
Authorities and humanitarian organizations are closely monitoring the situation as efforts continue to assess the impact of the attack and provide aid to the wounded. Meanwhile, tensions remain high in the region, with fears that the escalating conflict could lead to further clashes and worsen the humanitarian crisis affecting millions of people.
