The government has distanced itself from the violence that erupted during the recent Kawempe North by-election campaigns, attributing the incidents to individual perpetrators rather than state involvement.

Speaking on behalf of the government, State Minister for Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives, David Bahati, condemned the brutality and arrests witnessed during the campaigns. He assured the public that those responsible for the violence would be held accountable.

However, the opposition has expressed doubts over the government’s stance, citing a history of impunity in past elections. Opposition leader Mathias Mpuuga questioned the credibility of the government’s promises, pointing out that perpetrators of electoral violence in previous elections had never been prosecuted.

Mpuuga referenced the case of journalist Ashraf Kasirye, who was shot during the last general elections. Instead of facing justice, the individual responsible was reportedly promoted, raising concerns about the government’s commitment to ensuring accountability.

The Kawempe North by-election was marked by violent clashes between security forces and opposition supporters, leading to multiple arrests and injuries. The opposition continues to demand justice and fair electoral practices, urging authorities to take genuine action against election-related violence.

As investigations continue, the political climate remains tense, with opposition figures calling for reforms to prevent further electoral violence and ensure transparency in future elections.
