Jodi Vance, a rising talent in the bodybuilding world, passed away last Thursday in Columbus, Ohio, at just 20 years old. She suffered a fatal heart attack while attending the Arnold Sports Festival, one of the most prestigious events in the fitness community.

“Her heart stopped due to complications of severe dehydration. Despite every effort by the hospital, they were unable to revive her,” Vance’s family shared in a heartfelt social media post.

“She was a beautiful person inside and out, and she will be missed every single day. This was sudden and unexpected. Please give her family time to process this loss in peace. If anyone takes anything from this, please put your health first,” the statement continued.

Vance’s untimely passing serves as a reminder of the importance of health and balance, even in the pursuit of athletic excellence.

Vance was not competing at the Columbus event but had attended to support and coach her students, according to TMZ.

She reportedly began feeling unwell after the competition and was transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.7

Vance’s coach, Justin Mihaly, claimed in an emotional Instagram video that she had been using dangerous supplements without his or her family’s knowledge, despite not preparing for any upcoming competitions.

“Jodi made a serious error,” Mihaly said. “She used two extremely hazardous substances to enhance her physique — I assume just for the Arnold Expo — without my knowledge, without my approval, and without her family’s awareness or consent. There was absolutely no reason for her to be dehydrating.”

Vance, a Texas native, was a rising star in the bodybuilding world, placing third in the Women’s Physique division at the 2024 NPC Battle of Texas. She frequently shared photos of her progress, along with motivational quotes and personal reflections, with her followers on Instagram.

“A champion isn’t measured by wins, but by the courage to rise every time they fall,” Vance wrote in a post just last week.

“It’s not about how many times life knocks you down — it’s about standing up, pushing forward, and refusing to surrender. True greatness is forged in resilience, not just victory. #iameminent.”

Her coach, Justin Mihaly, expressed the deep sorrow felt by everyone who knew her, acknowledging the collective grief surrounding her death.

“You are welcome to direct your blame towards me if that’s how you believe we can best honor Jodi,” Mihaly said. “Everyone is heartbroken, and we’re all grieving the loss of an extraordinary young woman.”
