A Nigerian senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has been suspended for six months following allegations she made against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. The suspension, which was announced a day after she formally submitted a petition regarding the alleged sexual harassment, has sparked widespread debate across the country.

Akpoti-Uduaghan first made the allegations public in an interview with Arise TV nearly a week ago, which led to significant public interest and calls for an investigation. However, when she officially presented her petition in the Senate last Friday, it was dismissed on procedural grounds. Following this, the Senate Ethics Committee recommended her suspension, citing that she had brought “ridicule” to the chamber.
During deliberations on her fate, some senators argued for a three-month suspension instead, but the majority voted in favor of the six-month penalty as recommended by the committee. The decision has fueled further controversy, with many Nigerians questioning whether the Senate is attempting to silence the senator instead of addressing the allegations.
Public reaction has been intense, with several prominent figures and advocacy groups demanding a transparent investigation into the accusations. On Wednesday, two groups of protesters gathered outside the National Assembly in Abuja. One group voiced their support for Akpabio, while the other called for his removal, chanting, “Akpabio must go!”
As the debate continues, many Nigerians await further developments, with concerns growing over whether the allegations will be thoroughly investigated or swept under the carpet.
