Entebbe, Uganda – March 10, 2025

Six Ugandans who were trapped in Myanmar have been successfully repatriated, arriving at Entebbe International Airport on Sunday afternoon. Their rescue was facilitated by Hope Cry International (HIC), an international organization dedicated to assisting victims of human trafficking, with support from the Ugandan embassy in Thailand.

This marks the second group of Ugandans brought back from Myanmar, following an earlier repatriation of 23 individuals on May 23, 2024. Many of these victims were reportedly lured into Myanmar under false promises of lucrative job opportunities, only to find themselves trapped in scam centers and forced labor conditions.

Speaking on the matter, Ms. Betty Bigombe, Uganda’s ambassador to Thailand, emphasized the urgent need for stronger government measures to combat human trafficking. She confirmed that another group of approximately 40 Ugandans is currently in the process of being rescued from similar conditions in Myanmar.

Human trafficking remains a serious challenge, with many Ugandans falling prey to deceptive employment schemes. Authorities, alongside organizations like HIC, continue to work toward repatriating victims and raising awareness about the dangers of illegal recruitment abroad.

Government officials have urged increased vigilance and stricter regulations to prevent further exploitation of Ugandan citizens.
