Rwanda has announced a complete severance of diplomatic ties with Belgium, accusing the European nation of persistently undermining its sovereignty and interfering in regional affairs. The move comes amid escalating tensions between Rwanda and Belgium over the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The Rwandan government issued a formal statement on Monday, declaring that Belgian diplomats had been given 48 hours to leave the country. Kigali accused Brussels of taking a biased stance in the DRC crisis, particularly in relation to the M23 rebel group, which has been at the center of the conflict. Despite allegations from the United Nations and the United States that Rwanda is backing the rebels, Kigali has consistently denied any involvement.
Belgium has been a leading voice in urging European nations to impose sanctions on Rwanda over its alleged support for the M23. This has fueled diplomatic tensions, culminating in Rwanda’s decision to expel Belgian diplomats. In its statement, Kigali criticized Belgium for attempting to “sustain its neo-colonial delusions,” further accusing Brussels of mobilizing international opinion against Rwanda through “lies and manipulation.” The statement suggested that Belgium’s actions were aimed at destabilizing both Rwanda and the broader Great Lakes region.
Reacting to the decision, the Belgian government labeled Rwanda’s move as “disproportionate” and pledged to respond accordingly. However, it did not specify what countermeasures it would take.
The historical context of this dispute cannot be ignored, as Belgium was Rwanda’s colonial ruler until the country gained independence in 1962. The tensions highlight the lingering complexities of post-colonial relations, especially in regions with ongoing conflicts and geopolitical rivalries.
With diplomatic relations now severed, the situation remains fluid, and it is unclear how this decision will impact Rwanda’s international standing or its role in regional peace efforts.
