The International Crimes Division of the High Court has officially withdrawn all charges against the late Kawempe North MP, Muhammad Ssegirinya. Ssegirinya, who had spent most of his time in prison and hospital due to legal battles, was accused of orchestrating the Masaka machete attacks that resulted in the deaths of 26 people.

Ssegirinya’s legal troubles began when the state implicated him in the gruesome killings that terrorized Masaka residents. As a result, he was frequently in and out of prison, battling health complications that further worsened his condition. His prolonged detention and hospitalization marked a significant period of his political career, overshadowing his role as a legislator.
Following his passing, a by-election was held on March 13, 2025, to fill the vacant Kawempe North parliamentary seat. The election, marred by incidents of violence, ended with Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola of the National Unity Platform (NUP) emerging victorious. He now replaces the late Ssegirinya in Parliament.
The withdrawal of charges posthumously brings an end to the legal accusations against Ssegirinya. However, it raises concerns among his supporters and human rights activists about the nature of his detention and the broader implications of political persecution in Uganda.
