Lira City, Uganda – In a surprising political development, leaders of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in Lira have endorsed Minister of Health Jane Ruth Aceng for a second term as the Women Member of Parliament for Lira City in the 2026 elections.

A total of 253 FDC members, including the party’s City General Secretary Newton Freddie Okello and Chairman Denis Obet, publicly expressed their support for Aceng, who is a member of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). The endorsement marks a rare instance of opposition leaders backing a candidate from the government.
During the announcement, the FDC leaders emphasized their commitment to an issue-based and peaceful campaign. They rejected any form of intimidation, blackmail, or personal attacks, calling for a contest rooted in respect and democratic principles.
Aceng, who has served as Minister of Health, gained national recognition for her role in Uganda’s COVID-19 response. Her endorsement by opposition figures suggests a shift in local political dynamics, highlighting her influence and popularity in Lira City.
The decision by FDC members to back an NRM candidate may have broader implications for the political landscape in the region as the country prepares for the 2026 general elections.
