Lusaka, Zambia – President Hakainde Hichilema has issued a stern warning to his ministers, urging them to remain alert during cabinet meetings and refrain from dozing off. The president expressed concern over the trend of government officials falling asleep during crucial discussions, attributing it to indulgence and a lack of self-discipline.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of a new minister, Hichilema did not mince words about the matter. “In cabinet, somebody is sleeping at 10 hours – the question is where were they… if you can start conking there? To me, that is a crime, a serious crime,” he remarked.

Although he did not explicitly define what he meant by “indulgence,” local media have widely interpreted his comments as a reference to excessive alcohol consumption and late-night partying. The president’s remarks suggest that some ministers may be engaging in behaviors that compromise their ability to perform their official duties effectively.

Hichilema warned that such conduct could have serious consequences, including the risk of exposing state secrets and delaying essential government services. He emphasized that ministers must demonstrate discipline and commitment to their roles, ensuring that cabinet meetings remain productive and focused on national development.

This is not the first time government officials in Zambia or elsewhere have been criticized for sleeping during official duties. However, Hichilema’s strong stance on the matter signals his intent to uphold high standards of accountability and performance within his administration.

The warning serves as a call for greater responsibility among cabinet members, as the president seeks to ensure that governance remains efficient and responsive to the needs of the Zambian people.
