Rajiv Ruparelia, the son of Ugandan billionaire Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, was cremated on Tuesday in a solemn ceremony at the Hindu Crematorium in Lugogo, Kampala.

The emotional farewell drew close family members, friends, dignitaries, and business associates as Uganda paid tribute to one of its most promising young leaders. Hindu priests led traditional prayers, with the atmosphere turning especially poignant during the final rites. Overcome with grief, members of the Ruparelia family were seen in tears, mourning a profound and sudden loss.
Rajiv, aged 35, tragically lost his life on Saturday, May 3, in a high-speed car crash at the Busabala Flyover in Wakiso District. His Nissan GTR struck pavement barriers, overturned, and caught fire. He died at the scene.
Heartbreakingly, Rajiv had been set to serve as a groomsman that same day at the wedding of his close friend and business partner, Jonathan Bahizi Buteera, son of retired Deputy Chief Justice Richard Buteera.
In an official statement, the Ruparelia family called his death a “profound loss” and asked for privacy during this incredibly difficult time. A vigil has been ongoing at their Kololo residence since Saturday.
Rajiv was the Managing Director of the Ruparelia Group, a multi-sector conglomerate with interests in real estate, hospitality, education, and banking. He was also a beloved figure in Ugandan motorsport, playing a key role in revitalizing rally racing through the Rajiv Ruparelia Rally Team.
His untimely death has reignited concerns over road safety and infrastructure management, particularly on the Najjanankumbi–Busabala road, a project overseen by China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC). Eyewitnesses cited poor lighting and a lack of warning signs at the crash site as contributing factors.
Tributes have poured in from business leaders, politicians, celebrities, and everyday Ugandans, all mourning a man remembered for his vision, vitality, and generosity. Rajiv Ruparelia’s legacy, though cut short, has left an indelible mark on the nation.
