In a pre-dawn operation, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) counter-terrorism unit neutralized two suspected terrorists in Munyonyo, a Kampala suburb.
According to security sources, the suspects, reportedly armed, were intercepted and killed during an intelligence-led operation. The operation was part of heightened security measures ahead of Martyrs Day celebrations.
According to Colonel Chris Magezi, acting director of Defence Public Information, the operation was conducted based on credible intelligence indicating potential threats to national security.

Colonel Magezi assured the public that security services are on high alert to safeguard Martyrs Day celebrations. He urged citizens to remain calm yet vigilant, reporting any suspicious activities or individuals to the authorities promptly.
Martyrs Day, observed annually on June 3, honors Uganda’s Christian martyrs and stands as a major religious and public event. The occasion draws pilgrims nationwide and internationally to the Namugongo shrines for commemorative ceremonies.
Ahead of this year’s Martyrs Day celebration, security agencies have intensified their presence in Kampala, conducting sweeps and surveillance, particularly around potential soft targets.
Investigations into the identities and affiliations of the deceased suspects are currently underway, with authorities yet to release further details.
