Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has been hospitalised with an acute case of gastroenteritis, the Spanish club has confirmed.
The World Cup winner missed Real Madrid’s opening match at the FIFA Club World Cup against Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal in Miami on Wednesday due to a fever.
Coach Xabi Alonso said he hoped the France international would be available for the team’s next game against Pachuca on Sunday.
However, Mbappé’s hospitalisation casts doubt over what role he might be able to play in the monthlong tournament in the United States.
Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has been hospitalised with an acute case of gastroenteritis, the Spanish club confirmed in a statement on Thursday.

“Our player Kylian Mbappé is suffering from an acute case of gastroenteritis and has been admitted to hospital in order to undergo a series of tests and follow the appropriate course of treatment,” the club said.
Real Madrid drew 1-1 with Al-Hilal in the FIFA Club World Cup, with Federico Valverde missing a late penalty.
The match saw Gonzalo Garcia score for Real Madrid in the 34th minute, while Ruben Neves equalized for Al-Hilal with a penalty in the 41st minute.
Despite dominating possession and creating chances in the second half, Real Madrid couldn’t find the winning goal, and Valverde’s missed penalty in the 90th+2 minute would’ve sealed the win.
Kylian Mbappe trained with Real Madrid’s squad in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on Sunday but was notably absent from Tuesday’s final session before the match against Al-Hilal.
His last match was for France in the UEFA Nations League third-place playoff against Germany, where he scored his 50th goal for the national team. In that match, France secured a 2-0 win over Germany, with Mbappe netting the opening goal just before halftime.

Earlier in the tournament, Mbappe had scored France’s opening goal in the semifinal against Spain, although France ultimately lost 5-4.
Mbappe’s performance in the Nations League showcased his exceptional skill, and he’s now third on France’s all-time scoring list with 50 goals in 90 appearances.
Only Thierry Henry (51) and Olivier Giroud (57) have scored more goals for France. Given his impressive form and young age, Mbappe is expected to become France’s all-time leading scorer and solidify his position as one of the greatest players in French football history.
