Russia and Ukraine have exchanged drone strikes, with at least three people reportedly killed near the shared border by Russian forces.

Overnight Tuesday, attacks were reported across multiple locations in Ukraine as well as in Moscow.

These strikes mark the latest escalation amid stalled U.S.-brokered ceasefire efforts, with Russia seemingly eager to exploit the situation as global attention is largely focused on the war between Israel and Iran.

In one attack, a Russian drone strike on a village in Sumy killed an eight-year-old boy and two adults, injuring three others, according to the regional military administration.

Drone strikes also wounded five people in Kharkiv and four others in the Dnipropetrovsk region, local authorities reported.

These attacks followed a “massive” missile and drone strike on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv the previous day, which killed at least 10 people.

Regarding the Sumy attack, the regional military administration said on Telegram, “The strike took the lives of people from different families. They all lived on the same street. They went to sleep in their homes. But Russian drones interrupted their sleep – forever.”

Ukraine has also intensified its drone attacks on various targets within Russia in recent months.

Russia claimed that a Ukrainian drone targeted a residential building in Moscow overnight, injuring two people, including a pregnant woman, and starting a fire. Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, said the drone caused a fire on the 17th floor of a building in Krasnogorsk, west of Moscow.

“About 100 people were evacuated from the building, including 30 children,” Vorobyov added, noting the injured were receiving hospital treatment.

Russian air defenses reportedly shot down 20 Ukrainian drones overnight, including two over the Moscow region, according to local news citing the Russian Defense Ministry.

Russia currently occupies about a fifth of Ukraine and claims to have annexed four Ukrainian regions since its 2022 invasion, in addition to Crimea, seized in 2014.

U.S. President Donald Trump promised a swift end to the war during his campaign, but diplomatic efforts have yet to yield a ceasefire. While Washington facilitated direct talks last month, little progress was made, and no meetings have occurred in the past three weeks.

Kyiv accuses Moscow of deliberately sabotaging peace efforts to prolong its offensive and seize more territory.
