Bayern Munich overcame determined resistance from Flamengo to secure a thrilling 4-2 victory in their Club World Cup round of 16 clash, booking their place in the quarterfinals.

Harry Kane’s brace helped the German giants become the latest European side to eliminate their South American rivals from the global competition on Sunday. Flamengo coach Filipe Luis acknowledged the dominance of European football, remarking that the sport’s elite “remain in Europe.”

Vincent Kompany’s side will now face European champions Paris Saint-Germain in Atlanta on Saturday, with a place in the Club World Cup semifinals at stake.

Despite the passionate support of a large Flamengo crowd at Hard Rock Stadium, Luis’s team bowed out of the tournament, showing commendable determination throughout the match.

Bayern took an early lead when Joshua Kimmich opened the scoring in the sixth minute, before Harry Kane doubled the advantage just four minutes later with his first goal of the game.

Bayern appeared poised to run away with the match, but the three-time Copa Libertadores champions fought back to gain a foothold.

Their persistence paid off in the 33rd minute when Luiz Araujo delivered a dangerous cross from the left. The ball fell to Gerson, who unleashed a thunderbolt past Neuer, igniting the passionate crowd of 60,914.

However, Flamengo’s momentum was quickly halted just four minutes before halftime. Araujo’s poor clearance fell straight to Leon Goretzka, who calmly settled the ball and, from over 20 yards out, fired a precise shot into the corner to restore Bayern’s two-goal lead at 3-1.

Flamengo came out determined to fight back once more, cutting the deficit in the 55th minute. After Michael Olise handled a cross from Giorgian de Arrascaeta at close range, Jorginho calmly stepped up to convert the resulting penalty with ice-cool precision.

The contest was finally sealed in the 73rd minute when Konrad Laimer won possession in midfield and fed Joshua Kimmich, who then slipped the ball through to Harry Kane.

Kane confidently finished with one of his trademark strikes combining precision and power to beat Agustin Rossi and secure Bayern’s victory.

Flamengo coach Filipe Luis acknowledged the clear superiority of their opponents, saying, “It’s up to us to simply recognize the superiority of our opponent. They are very good we knew that. At this level, any mistake is fatal. Those who deserved to go through, got through.”

He added, “Our plan worked, and we were able to apply pressure and create goal-scoring opportunities, but they were better than us. We’re playing against the football elite. If Vinicius Jr. had not left for Real Madrid, we would have the best player in the world.”

Luis reflected on the broader reality of South American football today: “They [South American players] want to be in the elite, and that’s what they are. Even if we had won today and the tournament, it wouldn’t change the reality they’re high-quality teams.

We have many Brazilian players in our teams, but the European teams have the best ones. They have better players that’s a fact.”

European teams were widely expected to dominate the expanded Club World Cup, but some struggled during the group stage, while all Brazilian sides advanced and made a strong impression.

Bayern, however, helped restore a sense of what the European football establishment might call “order” ahead of Inter Milan’s last-16 clash with Brazil’s Fluminense. Meanwhile, Palmeiras continued their campaign by overcoming fellow Brazilian side Botafogo on Saturday.
