Kitgum General Hospital has finally received a mobile X-ray machine, restoring a vital diagnostic service after two years without a functional imaging unit.
The new device, which includes computer-aided diagnostic software, is expected to greatly enhance the district’s capacity for Tuberculosis (TB) screening and diagnosis.
Over the past two years, the absence of an in-house X-ray service forced patients to seek imaging from private facilities within Kitgum municipality often returning to the hospital with external results to continue treatment.

Dr. Geoffrey Okello, Medical Superintendent of Kitgum Hospital, welcomed the development, describing it as a critical step toward improving the quality of care. “This machine will not only reduce delays in diagnosis but also ease the burden on patients who have been incurring additional costs seeking services elsewhere,” he said.
The machine was delivered by the Ministry of Health as part of efforts to strengthen diagnostic capacity in public health facilities. Kitgum District Chairperson Arwai Christopher Obol lauded the acquisition, calling it a milestone in the district’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare.
According to him, the machine represents a critical boost to TB diagnostic capacity and aligns with the hospital’s long-term objective of achieving regional referral status, owing to its extensive service area.

State Minister for Disaster Preparedness, Relief, and Refugees, Lillian Aber, acknowledged the dedication of hospital staff in maintaining essential services despite difficult working conditions.
She committed to lobbying for the repair of the hospital’s main X-ray unit, which has remained non-functional for the past two years. Kitgum Deputy Resident District Commissioner Hajj Walire Marijan called on health workers to manage the new equipment responsibly and cautioned against any unauthorized charging for services.
“Any staff member found soliciting payment for X-ray services will face disciplinary measures,” Marijan warned.
