As of July 8, 2025, the United States has revised its visa issuance policy for Ugandan nationals applying for tourism and travel visas. The new policy limits visas to single entry and a validity of three months from the date of issuance.
“What this means is that an individual has three months from the date of visa issuance to enter the United States and may enter the United States only once on this visa,” the U.S. Embassy explained in a statement shared by Dorothy Nanyonga, Strategic Communications Specialist, on Thursday, July 17.

The embassy also clarified that the duration of stay in the U.S. is determined by immigration officers at the port of entry, not by the visa itself.
This marks the latest in a series of travel bans or restrictions issued by Washington, many of which have impacted African countries.
The Embassy explained that the authorized period of stay will be communicated to the traveler or indicated in the individual’s passport.
“It is important to verify the duration of your permitted stay upon entry into the United States and to ensure you depart the country by that date,” the statement advised.

This is the latest in a growing list of travel restrictions announced by Washington, many targeting African nations.
According to the Embassy, the allowed period of stay will either be told to the traveler or stamped directly in their passport.
“It’s important to check how long you’re allowed to stay when you enter the United States and make sure you leave before that date,” the statement added.
The Embassy also noted that the new single-entry, three-month validity visa aligns with the type of visas Uganda issues to U.S. citizens traveling for business or tourism.
Previously, U.S. business and tourist visas for Ugandan nationals were valid for two years.
Speaking to journalists in Kampala earlier this week, Tania Romanoff, Chief of the U.S. Mission Consular Section, stated that it is illegal for a Ugandan to use a visa to travel to the U.S. primarily for the purpose of giving birth, with the intent of securing U.S. citizenship for their child.
She further warned that student visa holders who drop out, skip classes, or leave their program of study without notifying the school risk having their visas revoked, and may become ineligible for future U.S. visas.
