The community of Mukono is in shock following the tragic death of Brenda Tuhaise, a young woman who died by suicide shortly after returning home from Saudi Arabia.

Brenda had spent three years working as a domestic worker—often referred to as a “Kadama”—with dreams of saving enough money to start a small business and build a better future for herself and her family.

Her dreams were shattered when she discovered that the money she had diligently sent home over the course of three years had been spent by her parents—without her knowledge or consent.

Brenda had returned full of hope, envisioning a fresh start built on the foundation of her sacrifices. But instead of finding the savings she had worked so hard to accumulate, she was confronted with the heartbreaking reality that everything was gone. The sense of betrayal and loss proved too much to bear.

Just a week after her return, Brenda was found dead in her rented room in Mukono. Reports indicate that she had ingested a large number of tablets—about 50—in a deliberate attempt to end her life. Her passing stunned neighbors and friends, who described her as a quiet, hardworking young woman with big dreams.

Brenda’s death has sparked a national conversation about the vulnerability of migrant workers and the absence of safeguards to protect their financial interests.

Like many others, she endured difficult and often harsh conditions abroad in hopes of securing a better future for her loved ones. Her story serves as a sobering reminder that for some returnees, the journey home brings not celebration—but profound heartbreak.

Brenda’s story underscores the urgent need for stronger support systems for returning migrant workers—including financial education, secure and transparent savings mechanisms, and accessible mental health services. Her death is a heartbreaking reflection of the deep emotional toll that broken trust and unfulfilled dreams can take.

As Uganda mourns Brenda, it also faces difficult but necessary questions: How many more returnees will have their hopes shattered by betrayal? And what can be done to ensure that the sacrifices of migrant workers are honored, not wasted?
