H.E. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, President of Algeria — once a Minister of Housing — recognized a critical gap in the country’s infrastructure. When he rose to power, he seized the opportunity to transform the nation through one of the most ambitious housing initiatives in Africa’s modern history.

The multi-billion-dollar housing project, funded largely by revenues from Algeria’s gas and oil exports to Europe, is reshaping the skyline of this vast North African country. With over a million flats constructed across various regions, the project not only addresses housing shortages but also symbolizes Algeria’s development vision and economic potential.

During a recent visit to Tlemcen, 500 kilometers from Algiers, a Ugandan Embassy staff member traveling with us remarked,

“When Uganda starts selling oil, we too shall have these beautiful roads and housing.”

Algeria’s housing revolution stands as both an inspiration and a model for other African nations seeking to convert natural resource wealth into tangible benefits for their citizens.
