Trump Deploys Nuclear Submarines Following Russian Ex-President’s Remarks

US President Donald Trump has ordered two nuclear submarines to be “positioned in the appropriate regions” in response to what he described as “highly provocative” comments made by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Trump said he acted “just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” emphasizing that “words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances.”

While the President did not disclose the specific locations of the submarines’ deployment, he adhered to US military protocol by withholding such details.

Medvedev recently issued threats against the US following Trump’s ultimatums to Moscow to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine or face tough sanctions.

Russia and the US hold the world’s largest nuclear arsenals, each maintaining a fleet of nuclear submarines.

In a Friday post on Truth Social, US President Donald Trump stated: “Based on the highly provocative statements of the former president of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, who is now the deputy chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions.”

Trump did not specify whether the submarines are nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed.

Speaking to reporters later, Trump said, “A threat was made, and we didn’t think it was appropriate. So I have to be very careful. I do that on the basis of safety for our people. A threat was made by a former president of Russia. And we’re going to protect our people.”

The Kremlin has yet to respond publicly, but Moscow’s stock market fell sharply following Trump’s announcement.

Trump and Medvedev have recently exchanged personal attacks on social media. This development follows Trump’s setting of a new deadline—8 August—for Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine, a deadline Putin has so far ignored.

Earlier, Trump had set a “10 or 12” day deadline and previously threatened Russia with severe tariffs on oil and other exports if the conflict did not end within 50 days.

Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s president from 2008 to 2012 and now deputy chairman of the Security Council, has accused US President Donald Trump of “playing the ultimatum game with Russia.”

In a post on X earlier this week, Medvedev said, “Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war.” He also called Trump’s earlier ultimatum “theatrical,” asserting that “Russia didn’t care.”

On Thursday, Medvedev warned of a “dead hand” threat—widely interpreted by military analysts as a reference to Russia’s retaliatory nuclear strikes control system.

Trump responded swiftly, describing Medvedev on Thursday as “the failed former president of Russia, who thinks he’s still president.” He cautioned Medvedev to “watch his words,” adding that “he’s entering very dangerous territory!”

Medvedev is a strong supporter of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine launched in 2022 and remains an outspoken critic of the West.
