Seeta High School Under Fire Again After Second Student Death at Mbalala Campus This Year
Seeta High School is facing renewed criticism after another student died under unclear circumstances at its Mbalala campus—the second such incident reported in 2025.

The deceased, 21-year-old Kevin Nsamba, was a Senior Six student residing in the boarding section of Seeta High School’s Mbalala campus. According to Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the incident occurred on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Despite the gravity of the situation, the school did not issue any immediate statement, prompting fear and widespread speculation within the community. By Monday morning, word of Nsamba’s death had already spread across Mukono town, with parents, teachers, and residents quietly exchanging concerns over the school’s silence.

Despite mounting concern, neither the Seeta High School administration nor local police issued an immediate formal statement following the incident. Initial attempts to obtain official confirmation were unsuccessful, further fueling speculation and unease within the community. It was only later that police formally acknowledged the tragedy.

According to preliminary accounts, Kevin Nsamba had participated in a football match with fellow students on Sunday afternoon. After the game, he and a group of students reportedly ran toward the school’s swimming pool, which was in use at the time by trainees under the supervision of a lifeguard or trainer. Nsamba is said to have jumped into the deep end of the pool.

Later that evening, during a scheduled movie session, students noticed Nsamba was missing. A search was conducted across the campus but failed to locate him. His absence was eventually escalated to the school principal, who notified the police the following day, around midday.

Police registered a suspected drowning case at Mbalala Police Station, which was later referred to Mukono Police Station. A joint team comprising detectives, the regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer, scene-of-crime officers, fire and rescue personnel, and forensic experts was dispatched to the campus.

Nsamba’s body was recovered from the pool and transported to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Police confirmed that the school’s swimming pool trainer has been arrested to assist with investigations. Preliminary findings indicate that the pool attendant was present at the time of the incident.

CCTV footage from the school is currently under review to establish the sequence of events and determine whether there was any negligence in handling the situation. The footage reportedly shows the deceased jumping into the deep end of the swimming pool, surfacing once, and then disappearing beneath the water.

This latest tragedy follows just months after the unresolved death of 16-year-old Elishama Ssesaazi, a Senior Three student at Seeta High School’s main campus, who was reported to have died by suicide.

Police investigations into that case remain inconclusive. The deaths highlight a disturbing pattern of incidents affecting schools in Mukono district. Weeks before Ssesaazi’s death, Carnelian Mary Ndagire, a senior three student at Mpoma Girls’ School, set herself on fire in protest over returning to the institution.

In a separate case, a month after Ssesaazi’s death, Ivan Oloya, a 30-year-old teacher at Seeta High Mbalala, was brutally killed near Code High School. Police arrested five suspects, including a 16-year-old, but the motive remains unclear.

The string of violent and mysterious incidents has intensified community concerns over student safety and the broader state of security in Mukono’s schools.

Mounting pressure on Seeta High School

The back-to-back deaths have left parents anxious and students increasingly fearful. Some parents contacted by URN declined to comment, reflecting a climate of unease and mistrust.

Seeta High School, once widely praised for its academic excellence and consistently strong national exam results, is now under growing scrutiny amid allegations of negligence and a lack of transparency. The recent student death has intensified criticism of the institution’s safety protocols and crisis management.

Questions have also been raised about the role of State Minister for Higher Education, Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo, who is the school’s proprietor. Observers and education advocates warn that his dual position—as both a government official and owner of the school—could compromise the independence and credibility of ongoing investigations.

As the community awaits the postmortem results and findings from police inquiries, a broader concern is beginning to take shape: Are these incidents isolated, or do they point to deeper systemic failures in school governance and student safety across the district?
