Algeria will face South Africa this Friday in a decisive Group C clash at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), taking place at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium in Kampala.

Fennecs head coach Madjid Bougherra has made his intentions clear ahead of Friday’s crucial Group C encounter. “Every match has its own specificity and must be approached like a final,” he said.

Algeria made a strong start to their CHAN 2024 campaign with a commanding 3–0 win over tournament hosts Uganda, placing them at the top of the group. A win against South Africa would secure their spot in the quarter-finals.
“We have a focused, disciplined, and motivated team with great group spirit,” Bougherra added. “We know South Africa is a good team that can change strategies quickly. We’ll treat this match like a final.”
South Africa return to CHAN after an 11-year absence and opened their campaign with a defeat to Uganda. Despite the setback, head coach Molefi Ntseki remains confident.
“We are tactically prepared to compete on equal footing with one of the continent’s strongest sides,” Ntseki said. “Our focus will be on key moments and playing our game. We are in a tough group, but we came to represent our country with pride.”
Algeria’s defensive record at CHAN remains formidable — the Fennecs have gone 10 consecutive matches without conceding, totalling 682 minutes of clean sheets.
Midfielder Iheb Belhocini emphasized the team’s consistent approach heading into Friday’s clash: “South Africa is considered one of the best teams in Africa. We’ll approach this match the same way we did against Uganda.”

On the South African side, midfielder Neo Maema expressed confidence despite the pressure: “We’ve studied how they played, and that will help us start better. We are here to compete and to win.”
The head-to-head record between the two sides is fairly even, with one win for Algeria and three draws. Their most recent meeting — a friendly in March 2024 — ended in a 3–3 thriller. The only previous CHAN encounter came in 2011, when Algeria secured a 2–0 victory.
Friday’s result will be pivotal in shaping the group ahead of the final round. A win for Algeria will confirm their place in the quarter-finals. South Africa, meanwhile, must secure at least a point to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Score Prediction: Algeria 2–0 South Africa
With their rock-solid defence and growing attacking rhythm, Algeria should have enough quality to get the job done without too much trouble.
