The Government of Uganda has entered into a bilateral cooperation agreement with the United States of America to strengthen collaboration on migration and asylum-related matters.

Advert

Under the new arrangement, Uganda will cooperate with the United States in examining protection requests from third-country nationals who are not granted asylum in the U.S. but are unable or unwilling to return to their countries of origin due to security, political, or humanitarian concerns.

This is a temporary agreement guided by specific conditions. Uganda will not accept individuals with criminal records, nor will it receive unaccompanied minors. In addition, preference will be given to asylum seekers originating from African countries.

Both governments are currently working on the detailed modalities for the effective implementation of the agreement. The arrangement underscores Uganda’s long-standing tradition of hosting refugees and asylum seekers, as well as its commitment to international cooperation on migration issues.
