Suspected in Herman Kiyaga’s Killing Tells Police the Businessman was Not the Intended Target in Robbery

Gerald Muyingo, the alleged shooter in the killing of businessman Herman Kiyaga, reportedly confessed to police that the fatal shooting was unintentional. Muyingo was arrested along with three other suspects just ten days after the incident.

Kiyaga, a well-known mobile money operator and wholesale shop owner in Kikandwa, Wakiso District, was attacked by armed men at his business premises around 8 p.m. two weeks ago.

At the time of the attack, Kiyaga was in the shop with one of his wives, counting the day’s sales. The assailants, believed to have carried out prior surveillance, stormed the premises and demanded money. CCTV footage from the scene shows the armed men issuing threats in Luganda as Kiyaga’s wife pleaded for mercy.

Kiyaga’s wife reportedly threw some money at the attackers in a desperate bid to save their lives, but the assailants continued to demand more, firing shots in the process.

During a joint police and military interrogation on Wednesday, 28-year-old Gerald Muyingo confessed that their mission had not been to kill Kiyaga.

“We came on the orders of our boss, who told us that [Kiyaga] had a lot of money and usually counted it in the evening,” Muyingo reportedly told investigators. “My role was to fire shots to scare them and nearby people. But he was killed by mistake.”

Following the confession, investigators took the suspects to the crime scene for a reconstruction exercise. There, Muyingo pointed out the spot where he had hidden the firearm after the robbery.

The four arrested suspects include two boda-boda riders who were allegedly meant to assist in the group’s escape, and two other accomplices identified as Ivan and Kayibanda.

Ironically, one of the robbers was accidentally shot by Gerald Muyingo during the scuffle, according to his confession.

“In the chaos as we tried to scare the business operators into handing over money, one of our colleagues was also hit by a bullet,” Muyingo reportedly told investigators. “He had arrived earlier, pretending to be a customer. He’s the one who later gave information that led to our arrest.”

Kakiri Division Police Commander, SP Gerald Abasa, has since urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious or criminal activities.

“The police are here for you. The military is here for you. We are all mandated to protect you,” said SP Gerald Abasa, the Kakiri Division Police Commander. “Your role is to alert us about the criminals terrorizing your communities. We promised to arrest these robbers — and now, we have them all.”

Kiyaga’s killing is part of a disturbing surge in targeted attacks on local businessmen. Just days before, Kasangati entrepreneur Deo Bwanika was gunned down under similar circumstances.

And last Sunday, the business community was rocked again when Anthony Mutinisa was fatally shot—this time by his own private security guard and assistant, Hillary Byaruhanga. The suspect fled in Mutinisa’s new Land Cruiser V8, but was later intercepted in Kanungu District, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, alongside alleged accomplice Mark Akampa.
