Typhoon Tapah Triggers Mass Evacuations and Disruptions Across Southern China
Flights Cancelled, Schools Closed as Storm Batters Guangdong with Strong Winds and Heavy Rain
Authorities in southern China evacuated an estimated 60,000 people as Typhoon Tapah made landfall on Monday in Guangdong province, bringing torrential rain, gale-force winds, and widespread disruption. The Guangdong Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow alert — the third-highest level in China’s four-tier warning system — forecasting severe thunderstorms and strong winds across the region.
The storm struck Taishan with maximum sustained winds of 108 kilometres per hour (67 miles per hour). In response, the province’s Emergency Management Department suspended all outdoor activities and closed public parks, beaches, and schools.
Guangdong, already battered by 16 typhoons this year, is once again on high alert. Tapah is expected to weaken as it moves northwest, eventually exiting the province.

In Taishan, classes were suspended for around 120,000 students, while more than 41,000 residents were evacuated from nearby Jiangmen. Chinese state media reported that over 3,300 emergency personnel were placed on standby in the area.
Elsewhere in the province, the cities of Jiangmen, Maoming, and Zhuhai raised their typhoon alerts and announced school closures.
In Hong Kong, a key regional economic hub, hundreds of flights were cancelled, leaving travellers stranded at the airport as airlines scrambled to reschedule departures. Nearby Macao also shut down schools, suspended public transport and taxi services, and reported significant flight disruptions.
In the neighbouring city of Yangjiang, just west of Hong Kong, approximately 1,785 workers were evacuated from 26 offshore wind platforms, along with 2,026 people from fish farms, according to Al Jazeera.
