The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has released a comprehensive traffic management plan ahead of the nomination of presidential candidates for the 2026 General Elections, scheduled for September 23 and 24, 2025.

The traffic management plan, overseen by AIGP Lawrence Nuwabiine, prohibits presidential candidates from driving through central Kampala. Major routes, including Kampala Road, will be restricted to reduce traffic congestion and strengthen security around the nomination venue.

Designated Nomination Route Announced

Traffic Police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura has announced a designated route that all presidential aspirants will be required to use during the nomination exercise.

According to Kananura, the route will begin in Kampala City Centre and proceed through Yusuf Lule Road, Mulago traffic lights, City Mortuary traffic lights, Kubiri traffic lights, Bwaise Flyover, the Northern Bypass, Busega Roundabout, Kajjansi Flyover, Old Entebbe Road, Lweza Fuelex, and conclude at the Kigo Road Junction, which leads directly to the nomination venue.

“These routes have been carefully selected to ensure smooth traffic flow and maximum security during the nomination exercise,” Kananura said, urging the public to strictly follow the traffic guidelines.

Parking and Access

Parking at the main nomination venue will be strictly limited to presidential candidates and their immediate teams. Invited guests are advised to use the designated parking area at St. Joseph’s Church of Uganda in Lweza.

To facilitate smooth access and enhance security, traffic police will issue clearly marked vehicle stickers for all authorised vehicles.

Planned Diversions

In a bid to ease traffic on the Entebbe Expressway and surrounding roads, several diversions will be implemented from 5:00 a.m. on both nomination days, remaining in effect until the conclusion of activities.

Kisubi: Traffic will be diverted to Nakawuka Road to reduce pressure on the Entebbe Highway.

Kajjansi Flyover: Vehicles will be rerouted via the Munyonyo Spur to access the city centre.

Lweza Fuelex/Kigo Junction: Motorists travelling from Kampala will be diverted toward the Kajjansi Flyover.

Authorities urge all road users to cooperate with traffic officers and adhere to the planned diversions to ensure safety and efficiency throughout the nomination process.

At the Kigo Rehabilitation Centre Junction, all presidential candidates exiting the nomination venue will be directed onto Kigo Road to ensure an orderly and secure departure.

Advert.

Meanwhile, at the Kigo Furniture Junction, motorists attempting to access Kigo Road will be redirected to continue along the Munyonyo Spur/Kajjansi Expressway to ease traffic pressure near the venue.

Residents residing within the restricted zones will be allowed access to their homes but must display special security stickers issued by the designated authorities. These stickers will be required at all checkpoints to facilitate movement and ensure only authorized individuals are permitted entry.

Police have announced that motorcycles (boda bodas) will be barred beyond designated cutoff points during the nomination period. Traffic officers will monitor all major junctions and access roads, keeping vehicles at least 50 metres away from key intersections when candidates are moving.

Violators risk penalties under existing traffic laws.

“We call on the public and participants to follow all directions from traffic and security personnel,” said SP Michael Kananura. “Display your vehicle stickers clearly, stay patient, and maintain order to ensure a smooth nomination process.”

The Traffic Directorate urges aspirants, supporters, and residents to plan ahead to avoid delays. Security officials also ask the public to avoid overcrowding and maintain calm along the routes.
