President Tebboune Announces Salary and Allowance Increment Starting 2026

Algiers — In a move aimed at reinforcing social protections and boosting citizens’ purchasing power, President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune has announced significant increases to public sector salaries, unemployment benefits, and student scholarships beginning in 2026. The revaluation may also be extended to retirement pensions, depending on the financial capacity of the state.

The announcement was made during the President’s regular televised interview with national media, broadcast Friday evening across Algerian television and radio channels. In his remarks, President Tebboune reaffirmed his commitment to the social priorities he had outlined during his presidential campaign and throughout his time in office.

“The distinction between promises and commitments is clear,” the President emphasized. “My commitments are documented in writing and will be fulfilled.”

Strengthening Social Gains

President Tebboune framed the planned salary and allowance increases as part of a broader agenda to strengthen Algeria’s social safety net and reduce economic pressures on households. He said the decision reflects the government’s intent to continue improving the standard of living for all Algerians.

“I had committed to revising, starting in 2026, the increases in salaries as well as student scholarships and unemployment benefits,” he said, adding, “These revaluations could also cover retirement pensions, depending on the state’s means.”

The President noted that Algerians are already experiencing a tangible improvement in their purchasing power, attributing it to economic reforms and the state’s ongoing support measures. The coming increases, he said, are designed to build on that momentum.

Collaborative Government Effort

In discussing the implementation of these measures, President Tebboune praised the efforts of Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui and his Cabinet, noting that such decisions are the result of continuous coordination at the highest levels of government.

“The goal of all these measures is to improve the purchasing power of our citizens—an improvement that Algerians are already experiencing,” the President said. “Achieving this goal is part of the daily work carried out with the Prime Minister and members of the Government.”

A Gradual Approach Based on Economic Capacity

While outlining these ambitious reforms, President Tebboune was careful to underline the importance of fiscal responsibility. He acknowledged that the full implementation of these increases—particularly for retirement pensions—would depend on the state’s available financial resources at the time.

This cautious approach suggests that while the government is committed to social progress, it remains mindful of budgetary constraints amid fluctuating global economic conditions.

Public Reaction and Economic Outlook

Initial reactions from economists and political analysts have been mixed. While many applaud the President’s focus on social welfare, others emphasize the need for parallel economic reforms to sustain such increases in the long term, including diversification beyond hydrocarbons and greater support for private sector growth.

With Algeria continuing to stabilize economically after global disruptions, the government’s ability to deliver on these commitments will be closely watched by both the public and international observers.
