ALGIERS — President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has reiterated Algeria’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, declaring that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, is “inevitable.”
In a nationally broadcast interview aired Friday evening on Algerian television and radio, President Tebboune emphasized that Algeria’s position has remained consistent from the beginning: full support for a sovereign Palestinian state. He stressed that this stance has guided Algeria’s diplomatic efforts, particularly since taking its seat on the United Nations Security Council.

“Algeria’s support for the Palestinian cause was founded from the outset on the establishment of a Palestinian state, a position I have personally supported at the UN and in many international meetings and official visits,” the president said. “There is no solution to this issue other than the establishment of a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital, and the illusion of a ‘Greater Israel’ is absurd.”
President Tebboune also highlighted the diplomatic gains Algeria has achieved in recent years, particularly in advocating for Palestinian rights on the international stage. He pointed to the 2022 Arab League Summit hosted in Algiers, which reaffirmed support for Palestinian unity and the reorganization of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.

“We introduced the Palestinian cause to the United Nations General Assembly, with 143 states last year voting in favor of admitting the State of Palestine as a full member of the UN,” he noted, lamenting that the outcome was ultimately blocked by a veto.
Push for African Representation at the UN
Turning to broader international issues, President Tebboune addressed the potential for Algeria to secure a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. While acknowledging the challenges, he said such a scenario is “not impossible” and called for a comprehensive reform of the UN system to give Africa greater representation.

“Africa must have at least 10 seats on the Security Council, including three permanent ones,” he said, adding that Algeria’s current mandate marks its fourth term on the Council — a record unmatched by any other nation.
Regional Diplomacy and Cooperation
The president also spoke about Algeria’s bilateral relations with neighboring countries, including Tunisia and Mauritania. He described the relationship with Tunisia as “strong and solid,” dismissing any speculation to the contrary as “nonsense.”
On Mauritania, Tebboune emphasized Algeria’s continued support, especially in restoring vital health and non-health infrastructure in the country. “Our efforts are in the best interest of both peoples,” he stated.
