Hon. Nasser Musa Odongkara Unveils New Era for Awqaaf & Endowments

Namugongo, Uganda – In a landmark development, the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has ushered in a new chapter with a decisive step to reclaim and redevelop the iconic Namugongo Masjid Noor Shuhada (Martyrs’ Mosque). Long a symbol of faith and also of dispute, the site is now at the heart of a visionary transformation under the leadership of His Eminence the Mufti of Uganda, Dr. Sheikh Shaban Mubajje, and Hon. Secretary General Haji Abbas Muluubya Ssekyanzi.

The historic breakthrough was marked by the introduction of a new team of dynamic leaders, notably Hon. Nasser Musa Odongkara as Head of the Department for Lands and Properties (Awqaaf & Endowments), and Hon. Abdulbaar Kaloozi as Head of the Department for Zaqaah and Sadaqa. Their appointments, enabled by the amended UMSC Constitution of 2022, signal a shift toward more energetic, strategic, and results-oriented management within the Council.

Unlocking Namugongo’s Potential

Strategically located along the bustling Namugongo corridor, the Martyrs’ Mosque site carries immense religious, cultural, and tourism potential. UMSC’s new leadership is keen to leverage this unique position to rebuild, modernize, and redevelop the property to international standards. This initiative is expected to boost tourism revenue, create jobs, strengthen interfaith harmony, and reaffirm the Muslim community’s contribution to Uganda’s national development.

Ground Cleared, Construction Set to Begin

In the past two weeks, the Namugongo site has been successfully cleared, paving the way for the launch of the long-anticipated redevelopment project. At the forefront is Hon. Nasser Musa Odongkara, whose department is driving a bold agenda for Awqaaf and Endowment growth.
