NEW DELHI, October 4, 2025 (APS) – Algerian para-athlete Nadjet Bouchref made history on Saturday by setting a new African record in the Club Throw (F51) event at the World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi, India.

Competing at the iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on the eighth day of the championships, Bouchref delivered an impressive throw of 14.57 metres on her penultimate attempt, surpassing the previous continental mark and reaffirming her place among Africa’s top para-athletes.

Although Bouchref finished fifth overall in a highly competitive final, her record-breaking performance was a moment of pride for Algeria and the African continent.

The gold medal was claimed by Aleksandr Iaramchouk, who dominated the field with a world-class display. He took the world title with a best mark of 3:53.26, followed closely by France’s Antoine Praud (3:53.62) and Sri Lanka’s Pradeep Puwak Pitikande (3:53.77).

Bouchref’s achievement underscores Algeria’s growing prominence in para-sports. The Algerian delegation has been one of the most consistent African teams at recent world championships, often finishing among the continent’s top performers.

The 12th edition of the World Para Athletics Championships, which began on September 27, has brought together hundreds of athletes from across the globe, competing in various track and field events across multiple classifications.

The competition serves as a key qualifying event for the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympic Games, adding extra motivation for athletes seeking to make their mark on the international stage.

The championships conclude on Sunday, the ninth and final day of competition, with Algeria still in contention for more medals. Mokhtar Didane will compete in the Long Jump (T36) final, while Kamel Kardjena will feature in the Shot Put (F33) final, both aiming to end the tournament on a high note for the Algerian team.
