The Frente POLISARIO has issued a stern warning to the United Nations Security Council over what it described as a “very dangerous and unprecedented” draft resolution on Western Sahara, circulated on 22 October 2025 by the United States as the penholder on the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

In a letter addressed to H.E. Mr. Vassily Nebenzia, President of the Security Council and Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, the Frente POLISARIO expressed deep concern that the proposed resolution departs from international law principles and undermines the foundations of the UN peace process in the disputed territory.

According to the letter, the draft resolution “constitutes a grave violation of the international status of Western Sahara” and threatens to derail decades of diplomatic efforts. The movement emphasized that sovereignty over Western Sahara “belongs exclusively to the Sahrawi people,” who have an “inalienable, non-negotiable, and imprescriptible right to self-determination.”

The Frente POLISARIO reaffirmed its readiness to continue engaging in the UN-led peace process “in good faith and without preconditions,” referencing its expanded proposal submitted to the UN Secretary-General on 20 October 2025 as a gesture of goodwill.

However, the letter cautioned that if the draft resolution is adopted in its current form, the Frente POLISARIO “will not engage in any political process or negotiations based on its content” and may be forced to “terminate cooperation with MINURSO and the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General.”

The Sahrawi liberation movement urged Security Council members to uphold the principles of the UN Charter and international law, and called on all stakeholders to use their influence “constructively” to foster credible and time-bound negotiations between the Frente POLISARIO and Morocco.

“The only viable path to achieving just and enduring peace in our region,” the letter concluded, “is through serious negotiations under UN auspices that provide for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.”
