Bayern Munich’s Unbeaten Run Ends in London as Arsenal Power Through

Arsenal were dominant from the outset, taking the lead in the 22nd minute when Jurrien Timber headed in Bukayo Saka’s corner—marking the 10th goal Arsenal have scored from a corner this season, the most by any team in Europe’s top five leagues.

Bayern Munich grew into the match after going behind, equalising just 10 minutes later. Joshua Kimmich delivered a crossfield pass to Serge Gnabry, and the former Arsenal forward crossed it for 17-year-old Lennart Karl to score from close range.

It was the first goal Arsenal had conceded in the competition this season, but it didn’t stop them from securing a fifth win in as many matches.

England winger Noni Madueke put the Gunners back in front when substitute Riccardo Calafiori fired a powerful cross into the area, which Madueke helped over the line.

The victory was sealed when Sunday’s North London derby hero, Eberechi Eze, clipped a ball over Bayern’s defence. Gabriel Martinelli, quick to react, rounded goalkeeper Manuel Neuer—who was caught out of position—to score and hand Bayern Munich their first defeat of the season.

This week appeared set to pose a real challenge for Arsenal, with games against rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich, and Chelsea. However, Mikel Arteta’s side have made light work of the first two, securing impressive victories that have reinforced their status as serious title contenders.

Arsenal cruised to a 4-1 win over Spurs and followed it up with a 3-1 triumph over Bayern Munich, continuing to perform like a team on the verge of their first major trophy since 2020.

Heading into this match, both Arsenal and Bayern Munich were the top two teams in the league phase of the competition, but, true to form, the Gunners dominated proceedings.

Arteta made just two changes to the side that triumphed over Spurs, bringing in Cristhian Mosquera and Myles Lewis-Skelly to bolster the backline. The depth of Arsenal’s squad has been a defining feature of their season, particularly with several key players in attack sidelined due to injury. Despite this, the Gunners have managed to keep up their momentum, thanks to their squad’s quality, and are now welcoming back key figures like Martin Ødegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, and Noni Madueke.

Both Madueke and Martinelli came off the bench to score, showcasing Arteta’s effective use of his “finishers”—players who are able to make a big impact late in matches.

With just one defeat this season, Arsenal sit atop both the Premier League and Champions League tables. As key players return from injury, they look increasingly difficult to dislodge, with their squad strength making them one of the most formidable teams in Europe right now.

Bayern Munich arrived in London unbeaten, but apart from a brief period following their equaliser, they never truly looked like threatening Arsenal, BBC reports.

Harry Kane, usually a prolific threat, was starved of service and, despite his ability to drop into deeper positions to link up play, he struggled to create or get on the end of any meaningful attacks.

Bayern’s star playmaker, Michael Olise, who has enjoyed an outstanding season with nine goals and 10 assists in 19 games, was also largely ineffective. While he did cause Myles Lewis-Skelly some problems at times, he was unable to impose himself on the game.

The German side also failed to deal with Arsenal’s set-piece threat, which has been a major strength for Mikel Arteta’s team this season. It was a disappointing night for Vincent Kompany’s side, who were unable to capitalise on their momentary equaliser.

The only bright spot for Bayern was 17-year-old Lennart Karl, who scored on just his second Champions League start. The teenager impressed with his composure on the ball and continues to shine in what has been a breakthrough season for him at Bayern Munich.
