President Yoweri Museveni has declared January 15 and 16 public holidays to allow Ugandans to participate fully in the country’s forthcoming general elections.
The declaration, announced through an official government notice, is aimed at giving voters sufficient time to travel to their polling stations and cast their ballots without interference from work or other commitments. The government said the move is intended to promote broad participation in the electoral process.

Ugandans are set to vote for a new president, members of parliament and local government leaders in the general elections, which are expected to take place across the country. The Electoral Commission has urged all eligible voters to turn up in large numbers and exercise their right to vote peacefully.
Security agencies have assured the public that measures are in place to maintain law and order before, during and after the elections. Police and other security forces are expected to be deployed nationwide to secure polling stations, electoral materials and voters.

Political parties and candidates have intensified their final campaign activities as the election dates approach. The campaign period has been marked by heightened political activity, with calls from civil society groups and religious leaders for tolerance, restraint and respect for democratic principles.
The government has previously declared election days public holidays in an effort to encourage voter turnout and ensure nationwide participation. Authorities have also urged employers in essential services to make arrangements that allow staff to vote while maintaining critical operations.

The outcome of the elections will shape Uganda’s political direction for the next five years, with observers closely watching the process amid calls for transparency, credibility and adherence to electoral laws.
