Rwabugumi Secures Rubabo County Seat, From District Council to Parliament

Rukungiri, Uganda | URN – Mathias Mwesigwa Rwabugumi, the current Rukungiri District councillor representing Nyarushanje Sub-county, has been elected as the new Member of Parliament (MP) for Rubabo County.


Rwabugumi, who contested under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) banner, was declared the winner on Saturday, January 16, at around 3:00 a.m. He secured 16,102 votes, surpassing the incumbent MP, Naboth Namanya of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), who garnered 14,780 votes.

This victory marks a significant political shift for Rwabugumi, who has been active in local governance. His win also ends Namanya’s tenure as the MP for Rubabo County, where he had served as the representative in the previous parliament.
The election was closely contested, with both candidates having a strong presence in the region. Voter turnout was high, reflecting the importance of the race for local constituents.

Rwabugumi, running on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket, was declared the winner on Saturday, January 16, after securing 16,102 votes. He defeated the incumbent MP, Naboth Namanya of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), who received 14,780 votes.


Other candidates in the race included Alex Bob Rugonde (Independent), who garnered 13,545 votes; David Tushabomwe Ndindirize (Independent) with 3,452 votes; and Andrew Niwabine (Independent), who polled 971 votes. Allan Nabasa of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) received 548 votes, while Arnest Ngabirano Katara (Independent) secured 313 votes. Moreen Tumwebaze (Independent) garnered 147 votes, and Eunice Nshabamagara of the Democratic Party (DP) received 55 votes.

After his victory was announced, Rwabugumi expressed gratitude to the voters for the trust they had placed in him. He called for unity, urging supporters of all candidates to come together for the development of Rubabo County and Rukungiri District as a whole.


“The time for politics is over. We must now focus on working together for the betterment of our people,” Rwabugumi said in his victory speech. He also reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling the promises made during his campaign rallies, pledging to work diligently for the welfare of his constituents.
