KAMPALA — Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, reportedly left Uganda and crossed into a neighboring East African country about a week ago, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Government officials, however, have firmly denied claims that the move was due to pressure from state security agencies.

“That’s the information we are getting now,” one official stated. “He left Uganda approximately seven days ago.”
Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, is reported to have left Uganda after days of rising tension. The departure comes just days after Kyagulanyi revealed that he had gone into hiding on January 16, following an alleged military raid on his home in Magere and growing concerns for his safety.
Since then, Kyagulanyi has repeatedly accused state agencies of targeting him, making claims on social media that the government has denied.

Minister for Information, Communications Technology, and National Guidance, Chris Baryomunsi, last week dismissed claims that opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, known as Bobi Wine, is a wanted man. Speaking on behalf of the government, Baryomunsi emphasized that Kyagulanyi had no reason to be in hiding.
“On behalf of the government of Uganda, I can confirm that Kyagulanyi is not a wanted man,” Baryomunsi said. “No security agency, including the police, military, or any other state institution, is pursuing him.”

“Baryomunsi and Nabbanja Urge Bobi Wine to End Hiding and Return Home”
Chris Baryomunsi, Uganda’s Minister for Information, Communications Technology, and National Guidance, has urged opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, to return to Uganda and continue his political activities within the boundaries of the law. He pointed out that former presidential candidates have been able to live peacefully in the country.
“There is no reason for him to remain in hiding. He is not wanted by anyone,” Baryomunsi said. “He is free to leave hiding, return to his home, and operate within the law.”

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja echoed this sentiment, calling Bobi Wine’s decision to go into hiding both unnecessary and politically driven.
“No one is actively pursuing Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu,” Nabbanja affirmed.
Chris Baryomunsi, Uganda’s Minister for Information, Communications Technology, and National Guidance, has called on opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, to return to Uganda and continue his political activities within the law. Baryomunsi emphasized that other former presidential candidates have lived peacefully in the country.
“There is no reason for him to remain in hiding. Nobody is after him,” Baryomunsi said. “He is free to come out of hiding, return to his home, and follow the law.”
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja echoed these remarks, describing Bobi Wine’s decision to go into hiding as unnecessary and politically motivated.

“No one is looking for Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu,” Nabbanja stated. “He should stop the theatrics and return home to his family.”
Kyagulanyi, a two-time presidential candidate, lost the January 15 election to incumbent President Yoweri Museveni. He has rejected the results, alleging widespread voter fraud and electoral irregularities.
The opposition leader also claimed that security forces raided his home and assaulted his wife, Barbie Itungo Kyagulanyi. However, these allegations were swiftly dismissed by the Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who stated that the military does not target women.
While Kyagulanyi has not publicly confirmed reports that he has left the country, his party officials have remained silent regarding his whereabouts.
