Iranians marked the 47th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution with mass rallies across the country on Wednesday.
Crowds filled Tehran and other major cities to commemorate the establishment of the Islamic Republic and to signal support for the leadership during one of the most turbulent periods in Iran’s recent history.

Demonstrators waved Iranian and Palestinian flags and carried portraits of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the republic’s founder. Chants of “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” echoed through the gatherings.

The commemorations prominently featured anti-US and anti-Israel imagery, including the burning and trampling of both countries’ flags. State media showed mock coffins draped in US flags bearing the names and photographs of American military commanders. Displays also included Iranian missiles and what officials said were fragments of Israeli drones downed during June’s 12-day conflict.

Although the rallies were organised to demonstrate public support for the government, that support is not universal.

In late December, protests erupted over the sharp سقوط of the rial and soaring inflation. The demonstrations spread nationwide and evolved into broader anti-government unrest before security forces moved to suppress them in a crackdown that rights groups said was deadly.
